VISUAL DATA FIRST IN THE UK TO AUTHOR DOLBY ATMOS BLU-RAY

StudioCanal’s The Gunman starring Sean Penn released on 30th June

Visual Data Media Services has announced today its completion of the first ever Dolby Atmos Blu-ray to be designed and authored in the UK.

StudioCanal’s The Gunman, starring Sean Penn and Idris Elba is the story of a sniper on a mercenary assassination team and is due for UK home entertainment release on the 30th June.

Dolby Atmos is a concept based on audio ‘objects’ where sound can be mixed as a single audio element, an object, that’s independently placed in three-dimensional space.

The Visual Data authoring team worked very closely with Dolby to produce The Gunman Blu-ray, performing quality control at Dolby Atmos configured suites at Dolby’s headquarters in Wootton Bassett and Soho with Dolby also providing the encoding software and training.

Torsten Bog, Head of Authoring at Visual Data said:

“Visual Data is one of those companies that wants and needs to be a step ahead in a world experiencing technological warp speed change. Working on this first UK Dolby Atmos authoring project was a great learning curve for us and has equipped us to work across all formats of delivery now, including VOD.

Although Blu-ray offers a much larger capacity disc to store audio content on, there is still a limit and one of the skills of the team at Visual Data is managing this space to ensure that the video quality maintains its brilliance alongside the audio.”

Dolby Atmos supports up to 128 simultaneous audio objects. These include stationary sounds that are reproduced through all the speakers, such as a music background or ambient effects. Content mastered for home reproduction includes all the audio objects from the original film, placed in three-dimensional space, just as in the cinema.

Stephen Hill Servicing Manager at StudioCanal added:

‘ When we knew that we were going to be completing our first Dolby Atmos disc in the UK we approached Visual Data as we were confident that they had the expertise and industry contacts to deliver. This decision was rewarded with timely delivery of a premium product which is what we have come to expect from them.’

Dolby Atmos delivers captivating, multidimensional sound that places and moves specific sounds anywhere in the room, including overhead, to bring entertainment alive all around the audience.

Since its introduction in the cinema in 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, seven Academy Award® winning directors, and 16 Academy Award winning sound mixers, among others. Now, UK entertainment enthusiasts will be able to enjoy Dolby Atmos in their home theatres.
